Got a documentation request for OneNote 2010?
Posted on 20. Nov, 2009 by OneNote in Help Articles
We’re very interested to hear from all the Beta testers out there if there are any OneNote 2010-specific features (new, changed, or old) that you’d like to see documentation about.
We’d also like to know what kind of content would be most helpful to you — traditional Help articles, visual walkthroughs with lots of screenshots, step-by-step tutorials, videos, training courses, reference charts, cheat sheets, or anything else you’d like to see?
Please post a comment here to let us know what would be most helpful to you.
Thank you!

I love OneNote. I use it at home all the time. The new release has tempted me away from Evernote. I hope with the Web App option to be completely synced everywhere with my OneNotes. Great work.
I am trying to introduce OneNote into my law firm, as it looks like the perfect tool for research and content creation. The problem I am having is with the printer – it has installed, and is visible in the printers section, but when I print to OneNote, nothing happens. When I try to insert a printout, the green bar goes half way, and then stops. This is terribly frustrating, as I can’t show OneNote off properly to my colleagues without the printer function! (‘Send to’ from Outlook works, but that’s not the same thing).
I’m running the 2010 Professional Plus Beta on XP SP3 at work on an Admin account (I understand this can make a difference)

How do you rotate a PDF in OneNote by 90 degrees? I had a powertoy in 07 to do it but now it doesn’t work in beta. Thanks.

Will OneNote 2010 work with Outlook 2007 in terms of assigning tasks (or to do) from OneNote to Outlook 2007? Everything seems to be greyed out and can not assigne the tasks.

For academic researchers, the one thing that keeps Onenote from being the go-to source is its lack of bibliography tools. Right now, Zotero (developed by the CMNH at GMU) is the only tool available for both notetaking and citation integration. If Onenote could add a cite-while-you-write (CWYW) function like Word has for Endnote and Zotero, it would make it more competitive choice for students and faculty. I suggest at least that OneNote 2010 provide documentation about whether citation/bibliography tools are available, and possibly to suggest ways to use it in concern with Word’s existing CWYW capabilities.

I use to be able to see the “Print to OneNote” option in my printer settings, but it doesn’t anymore. Is there something I need to do differently? On my Vista, I’m able to see it but on the XP, it doesn’t. Is it because of the OS versions? Is there a way to add it on the XP version?

I am a graduate student in mathematics and I frequently take notes on my tablet alternating between writing in words and in formulas. Every now and then, and more frequently in sidenotes than otherwise, my handwritten notes shift unexpectedly, leaving my equations unintelligible. I believe this is happening because my equations often span two or three lines however I am not sure what causes a shift to happen. I want to know if there is a setting that can prevent this from happening, and if not I would really like one to exist in the future.

Update: This never used to happen to me in 2007, but now all of my equations are clumping. It has completely destroyed one of my days of notes because I can’t parse out one equation from another. It has also almost destroyed one of my homework assignments, but every time something happened with that one I was able to hit the undo button to fix it. Luckily there are recordings of the class whose notes are botched, but if this happens in any other class I’m sunk. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

I’ve been pasting files into OneNote pages for use later, rather than keeping them in folders on my Desktop or in my inbox. Most work fine – PDFs, DOCs, email messages, etc.
Excel docs, however, don’t cooperate. Once they’ve been pasted – as copies of files, not printouts or links – I can never open them again. It claims that OneNote can’t find them. Even if the original is on the same SharePoint site as the notebook, or on my desktop, or wherever, OneNote always tries to point to my temp directory and fails to find them.

Hello, at work I am able to drag text from IE onto OneNote and it auto links back to the text and leaves text on OneNote that I can highlight and read. This is the ultimate note taking tool. I am on Office 2010 beta at work and at home but this does not work at home. I know I can use the OneNote tabs on IE but this is different. I simply drag and drop highlighted text onto OneNote.

Hello, I have retained a lot of information writing research articles in the notebook with tabs to share with my class, and I I have lost the availabbility to open it. What has happened? It staes that someting is causing me not to be able to use it for some reason. There is a debug button that I have selected but nothing changes. What can I do to correct this problem. I have a presentation this week and I can not use the information I stored in Onenote. I love this program. I am taking a class and this is great for organizing your notes/work. Easy to develop a handbook but I can’t send the notebook with all of the pages included because they are contained as folders. You can’t send a folder as an email attachment. I have the same problem as Jugwunth’s message.
Thank you!

Teri – When I first started, I had the same problem. I realized that I was using an old notebook (it was in 2007 format). If this is the case you have to convert to 2010 format by right clicking on the notebook’s tab, opening properties and clicking the button that says “convert to 2010″. If it is already in that format, that button should be grayed out. I hope this helps, because it is generally a great feature!

Hi, I need to have a One Note page inserted into a message as an attachment and can’t figure out how this can be done. The page becomes part of the message but I would prefer it to be an attachment. Could anyone out there assist. Thanks.

The text seems to wrap at an arbitrary position. In the previous version of OneNote, the text wrapped to match the size of the box you enter the text in. Where do you control the text wrap width ?

Hey,
I have a suggestion for the whole office suite when you make the “Taps” in all programs the same, you can get a better workflow and you don’t annoyed that something is missing! E.g. the drawing-tap into OneNote in other programs the pen tap, that’s nonsense … and also that PowerPoint can convert drawings in a form and OneNote, which is of course intended for students who simply can not do! Please still change, otherwise the Office package ever more complicated and we do not want that.
sorry for my bad english ;)

How to i search for all of the pages that were created or modified during a given time period. For instance, it would be nice to gather all my notes from the previous week and use them while preparing my weekly status report.

I have been using the OneNote Beta for a couple months now, everything has been working fine up until today when it shuts down shortly after I boot it saying “Onenote has stopped working” -> closes -> then displays ” a problem caused the program to stop working” with options to debug and close program. Although when I run a debug there is nothing done and it just shuts down.

This is a simple request that will make many, many lawyers happy. Make subsections an option for Microsoft outlining (i.e., Section 2.0; 2.1, 2.2, etc.)
I would love to draft contracts using one note, but the lack of support for subsections is a major obstacle.
thanks.

Say, you drop a few URL address into a new page, or combine some .pdf files for a project you are working on.
You can drop the content willy nilly, anywhere on the page.
Is there a way you can “align”/”format” that content as one group, instead of manually aligning them as individual components?

Hello,
I would like to be able to Alphabetize my Sections within my Notebooks automatically. Sure, I know I can click and drag them to my heart’s content, but it would be great if they could be auto-sorted. Thank you for making a grat product! It is actually what is keeping me bound to the MS Office Suite. If it were not for OneNote, I would switch to other software for my needs. Thank you!

Message for Juan – Sort Sections – go here to learn about a powertoy that sorts sections. I’m using it with 2010: http://blogs.msdn.com/descapa/archive/2007/03/03/sort-sections-powertoy.aspx

Would it be possible to promote the visibility of the Search option on this site? Please move it to the top of the page, so I don’t have to scroll for it. (Remember, people are using different screen sizes now and what you see in the office may not match what’s in the field. Think netbooks, etc.)
Also, how do you make a simple outline in OneNote? Documentation covering this and other simple usage scenarios is hard to track down.

I prefer a quick reference guide. This helps those of us that have used 1NOTE on both 2010 & 2007 versions. Indicate basically 1 cryptic way for each of its many capabilities. The basic logic for using the application then becomes evident to a lot of users.

Text styles are great, but is there a way to customize it? (like in word, where I can change Heading 1 to a new font, size, color?) I love the new outline function :)
love the new highlighters, but there’s such a contrast between the darker colors and pastel ones. Can we get some in between? custom colors for drawing with highlighter/pen?
ribbon customizations are great, very helpful.
really need a way to edit “printed” images- just some basic functions like rotate, crop, borders would be great!
borders around text boxes, text box fill colors…
thank you onenote team for making my life easier!

I would like to add my vote to having Borders around text boxes. It would provide a great way to separate content, when printed in paper, xps, or pdf form to show where ideas and comments are different.

If I read your request correctly you simply drag the page or pages from the unfiled section to the section of your choice.

In OneNote 2007 there was provision for “new group section” – but I can’t seem to find it in 2010 Beta. Is it deliberately-/accidentally left out, still going to be incorporated or am I looking in the wrong place ??

I created a new Notebook and want the New Side Note to be saved to an Unfiled Notes tab in that Notebook, not the default notebook. Could not find a way to target the save to that new Notebook, so I dragged and dropped the Unfiled Notes tab folder to my new Notebook.
Problem with that workaround is that now I don’t have an Unfiled Notes tab in my Personal Notebook. So, all notes-on-the-fly will now go only to the one notebook.
Suggest all notebooks have an Unfiled Notes folder with a means to target the save of a note-on-the-fly to a selected notebook.

You all should consider, creating a Recycle Bin for OneNote or have deleted items from OneNote sent to the primary Recycle Bin.

Links: I’m using the Firefox browser. When I copy web text to my Unfiled Note, no link is created and the web address is not copied with the text (i.e. 2007). I verified that this should occur via the Options setting.

Hello,
This might be as simple as linking current documentation to this search term. But how do I flatten a notebook so that everything in it is saved as an image file to the background?
I frequently annotate powerpoints, pdfs, etc for my notes while I’m in class, and this would be really helpful for taking notes on top of diagrams (without having to click the “image as background” button for each powerpoint slide).
Thanks!

What does the message “One or more pages of the printout below are hidden. To remove this message, delete al lpages of the Printout below.” mean? As far as I can tell, all the pages are visible. What happened?
