Got a documentation request for OneNote 2010?

Posted on 20. Nov, 2009 by OneNote in Help Articles

We’re very interested to hear from all the Beta testers out there if there are any OneNote 2010-specific features (new, changed, or old) that you’d like to see documentation about.

We’d also like to know what kind of content would be most helpful to you — traditional Help articles, visual walkthroughs with lots of screenshots, step-by-step tutorials, videos, training courses, reference charts, cheat sheets, or anything else you’d like to see?

Please post a comment here to let us know what would be most helpful to you.

Thank you!

I’d like to know how we are going to host Notebooks in the cloud and how Onete Mobile is going to synchronise, be it direct to the cloud or via USB to my lapotop…

The menus have changed. Documentation on how to build a ribbon will be helpful. Include info about building the ribbon and/or quick access bar that acts like the options we had before. Also make recommendations for things to include if we type our notes or pen our notes.

Can you write documentation on formatting? I.e. double spacing, etc.

I’d like to get more details about the “share as web page” feature in 2010. How will this work? What will be the required infrastructure? We’re interested in sharing content with others (read-only) who may not have ON installed.

I’m not finding a way to adjust the paragraph spacing in a OneNote area in 2010; this was handled with List Formatting options in 2007. Where did this go?

Can you provide more (and more detailed) documentation of all the Math features and functions?
Math and physics note-taking/book summarizing is the #1 use of OneNote for myself and at least 20 others at my university.

I am looking for a wayto change line spacing and paragraph options. In ON07, I could just click on Formatting to change spacing. However, in ON10, the paragraph spacing options tool does not work.

Is there a way to “lock” a drawing…say a rectangle…around specific text…so they can be moved at the same time around a note? Or, is there a way to put a color tint to a text box. I think the tint idea would realllllly offer people an easier way to create diagrams. Right now, it just takes too much effort to draw a box around specific text, draw arrows, and move them around.

      Megan,

To your question, NO, there’s no way to do that in 2010.

      Sidenote:
Like Megan, I’d very much like to be able to lock a text box w/in a drawing box for making diagrams (with hyperlinks to the page that describes the object). I’d want to use something like the Grouping feature that you find in Visio. But the rest of what she describes, with drawing arrows and moving them around, becomes a poor-person’s Visio. I think this would add another level of complexity to a tool that strives for simplicity.

This product is clearly for text notes, not diagrams. While the text features may overlap with Word’s text handling, adding the features she’s asking for go WAY into Visio’s model, IMHO, and should be avoided.

Keeping the product true to the original intent is a lot of what keeps it easy to use.

I too would very much like this feature. I would like to use drawings like I do shapes in Word, such as callouts. In Word, you can easily lock the shapes so that they stay in position relative to the text or images that the shape was placed next to.

Stew informs this isn’t possible in OneNote. But doesn’t that pretty much make drawings useless? For example, say you want to draw a circle around some text to emphasize it, using the pen tool. If that circle doesn’t move with the text, it’s useless. I’m new to OneNote (this is my first version), but love it. Maybe because I’m new I’m missing something here?

    * Need Sorting of Pages A-Z

    * Documentation – video with step-by-step and sample task accomplishments. Seeing is believing and better understanding. It is also a lot easier and less confusing.

    * when coping text from web page in “Text” it is important to keep the style like italic and bold.

    * Someone else here suggest Aspen law Study Desk features. After reviewing, I realize there is a big need for study ability (i.e. flash/cue cards). Teachers and students will create their own “deck” and share it with others around the world. Great opportunity – http://www.aspenlaw.com/studydesk/Default.asp

    * I love the auto linking feature only because it keeps a thumb nail view. Otherwise, OneNote already copies or embeds the link i.e. 2007. My suggestion is to make this available from all browsers, not just IE, and to allow the user to optionally pick the size of the thumbnail. Current thumb nail size is too small to tell what your really looking at.

    * The Ribbon needs more work and also seamless integration with Outlook besides the ability to print to.

    Wish List;

There should be incorporated a feature that allows tables to be converted formated text and vice-versa.

Final formating can be done in Word or Excel.

All my friends use OneNote in Law School. There is a new program called Aspen Law StudyDesk http://www.aspenlaw.com/studydesk/). It includes study tools, such as flashcards, quizzes, and course outlines. It would be great if OneNote could offer these features.

I think OneNote is useful for outlining but I would like to see a flashcard and quiz feature as well.

In one note 2007 I was able to set a default template when I would print pictures to one note. I am a physical therapist and we take digital pictures of the patients then send them off with a printout of them doing the exercises.I tried setting a new default template for new page, but this did not carry over to print to one note. Please advise how i can print to a particular one note template.

    I’d like:

    Fill option for shapes
Data pasted directly from spreadsheets to retain its original formatting (cell colour etc.)
A checklist feature (I want to make checklists that don’t have to be linked to Outlook, because the best thing about OneNote is that it lets me do everything in one place).

Excellent program though, I love it.

I use OneNote so that I can seemlessly work on projects at home, at the office and on my laptop. How do I synchronize the beta version with my 2007 version of OneNote? When I first set up the synchronization in 2007 the instructions were lengthy and difficult. i hope that it will be simpler with 2010.

    - How do we modify pages? This no longer works like OneNote 2007 as the XML format has changed.
    - How do we create/pulish an add-in? The IOneNoteAddIn interface no longer exists in the OneNote 14.0 object library
    - How do we add our new add-in to the Ribbon?

This may or may not be known already, but i’m just letting you know like a good beta tester should do. When copying text from Wolfram Mathematica into OneNote, I can only copy one line at a time. When I try to copy more, OneNote puts my note document into the middle of a very long page and/or crashes.

Can you restore “multiple” / ALL notebooks at once. Note: I have created 30 different notebooks. All I can do is:
    1. back up
    2. copy backup to my laptop
    3. MANUALLY / INDIVIDUALLY open each notebook to “restore”.

Am I missing something where I can “shift-click or ctrl click” to highlight all notebooks for “restore backup”

    thks in advance

I have a few questions that I would like help with from converting from OneNote 07 to 10. First when I print documents to OneNote I cannot seem to adjust the size like I could in 07 is there way to do that? I am a student and primarily use OneNote to take class notes with, in 07 I could adjust the size of the Power Point slides by adjusting the print size, any recommendations? Second, with OneNote 07 after I printed slides to OneNote I could click on an area of the slide in OneNote and type, in 10 it seems to only select the entire slide, is there a way to type? Thank you for your help!

Could you tell me how to use the Matrix button, the Large Operator button, and the Equations button. They are all grayed out and I can’t click on them.

Also I like to have individual tags on the quick access toolbar, I don’t want a button that will list all of them at once that crowds up my screen.

And i kind of miss that language button that you can slect what langauge you want the word in that is on the toolbar that has a drop down. I don’t like it when the giant language thing pops up on the side, I pick the one I want, and then I have to close it. I rather have a simple quick access on the toolbar.

I prefer to send my screen clippings to the Clipboard and not directly to ON.

    Thanks for assistance.

    • Hi Bruce, we will soon have an updated article about this. Meanwhile, most of the options you knew from OneNote are still available in OneNote 2010 Beta. To check them out, please see this article: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote/HA102819781033.aspx

There is a new feature in the 2010 screen clipper that asks you where you want the screen clipping placed. You can either specify this each time in the dialog box that pops up or you can set a default behavior for OneNote to use each time. For the permanent setting, go to File > Options > Send to OneNote > Other Content and then make a selection for the Screen Clippings option there.

Is there way to open a OneNote file to a specific document when the program is started?

    Reply to this comment
    • Hi Richard, OneNote typically remembers the last place in your notebook that you were at when you shut down OneNote. It will open to that place in your notes when you next start OneNote.

If you want to always open to a specific page or section in any notebook, you can make a special shortcut on your desktop for this. Here are the steps:

      1. In OneNote 2010 Beta, right-click the page tab or the section tab where you will want the shortcut to go.

      2. On the shortcut menu that appears, click the “Copy Link to Section” command (if you right-clicked a section tab in step 1) or the “Copy Link to Page” command (if you right-clicked a page tab in step 1).

      3. Minimize OneNote and go to your Windows desktop.

      4. Right-click any blank place on your Windows desktop and click New > Shortcut.

      5. In the dialog box that appear, click once in the field where you’re asked for the location of the item, and then press CTRL+V to insert the path you previously copied.

      6. Click Next. and then enter a name for your shortcut (for example, the name of the section or the page this shortcut will link to.

      7. Click Finish.

Now if you double-click the shortcut icon you have just created, OneNote 2010 Beta will open to the section or page that you wanted.

By the way, this also works with different notebooks (right-click a notebook icon on the Navigation Bar to get its full file path). Hope this helps!

Over the years I have been looking for an application that would allow you to insert space into a scanned document. This would greatly assist with work sheet assignments needing more room for calculations or written answers. Will One Note be able to do this? Teachers and students would greatly appreciate that type of software.
