During the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta program, we expect our customers to have many questions about Office 2010 and OneNote 2010. This Help article will be periodically updated to address such questions, so that you can easily check out the latest rumor control whenever you return to this site.

If you have questions about OneNote 2010 Beta (or about Office 2010 Beta in general) which are not already answered in one of the other Help articles on this site, please post them below. Responses cannot be guaranteed, as Beta software offers no technical support. For more information, please read About This Site.

Note:  Answers provided here are intended for the Beta versions of Microsoft OneNote 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 and may not apply to the final, released versions of the software. Frequently Asked Questions about Microsoft OneNote 2010 Beta

  • Is the OneNote Web App and SkyDrive integration available for Beta testing?
No — the OneNote Web App was not included in the Office 2010 Beta download package because it was still undergoing testing. However, this feature is now available in the released version of OneNote 2010. For more information, click here.

  • When I try to share a notebook in a Web location, I get the error message “This service is currently not available.” What’s wrong?

Please see the answer to the previous item titled, “Is the OneNote Web App and SkyDrive integration available for Beta testing?”

  • Why does the ribbon keep disappearing whenever I click a ribbon tab and then return to edit my notes?
While the other programs in the Microsoft Office 2010 suite all display the ribbon by default, OneNote 2010 hides the ribbon when it’s not in use. This is an initial “factory setting” intended to maximize the amount of note-taking space you have on a page — especially if you’re working on a laptop, Tablet PC, or a netbook with a smaller screen. You can freely change this setting by pressing CTRL+F1 to toggle the ribbon on or off.

  • Does OneNote 2010 Beta come in a native 64-bit version?
Yes — when you downloaded the Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus Beta, you were given the choice to download either the 32-bit (x86) version or the 64-bit (x64) version. If you downloaded the 64-bit version of Office 2010 Beta, OneNote 2010 Beta will be available in its native 64-bit version. If you downloaded both versions, you can use your Multiple Activation Key (MAK) code to activate either version.

  • Does the “Send to OneNote” print driver work on 64-bit systems?
Yes — OneNote 2010 Beta includes a fully functioning “Send to OneNote” print driver in both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and both versions work on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

  • When using the “Dock to Desktop” feature on a netbook, OneNote docks to the top of my screen instead of to the right side. How can I get the original left/right split back?
Left-click and hold the title bar of the docked OneNote 2010 window and then drag it to the side of the screen, releasing the mouse button only once you’re outside of the docked OneNote window. This should work for docking the OneNote window to any side of your screen. (Special thanks to our Beta tester Elena for submitting this tip.)

  • Are there any page, section, or notebook templates available for OneNote 2010 Beta?
Yes — you can download any of our free OneNote 2007 templates and use them with OneNote 2010 Beta. Click here to view the full list of template categories.

  • How do I apply a template? I see no command for doing this on the ribbon.
Some commands have been moved to more contextual locations in OneNote 2010. Since it’s only possible to apply a template to a new page, the command has been moved to the New Page button menu. Click the little downward-facing triangle next to the New Page button (located at the top of your page tabs), and then click Page Templates. This opens the Templates task pane, where you can browse, apply, manage, download, and customize OneNote templates.

  • I’ve installed Microsoft Office 2010 Beta on my Windows smartphone but I can’t get OneNote 2010 Beta to sync. What’s wrong?
This is a known issue in the 64-bit version of OneNote 2010 Beta. You can successfully sync with the 32-bit Beta client, but the 64-bit Beta client is currently having sync issues. We’re working hard to resolve this issue in the final version.

  • When does OneNote 2010 Beta expire?
OneNote 2010 Beta (and all the other programs in the Office 2010 Beta) will expire in October 2010. At that time, you can uninstall the Beta software and download the trial version of OneNote 2010 or purchase the retail version. OneNote 2010 will be available for purchase as a standalone version and it will also be included in all of the Microsoft Office 2010 suites.

  • Is OneNote 2010 Beta available for the Mac?
No — at present, OneNote 2010 Beta is available for Windows only. Please see the full system requirements for more information about running OneNote 2010 Beta.

  • Is there a OneNote app available for the iPhone?
No — at present, OneNote is available for Windows computers and Windows Mobile phones only. Please see the full system requirements for more information about running OneNote 2010 Beta.

  • Is OneNote 2010 Beta available in languages other than English?
Yes — aside from English, all of the programs in the Office 2010 Beta are also available for use in Simplified Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. The final retail version of all Microsoft Office 2010 programs including OneNote 2010 will be available in several additional languages.

  • I love the OneNote 2010 Beta and can’t wait to get my hands on the final version. Where can I purchase it?
The final retail version of OneNote 2010 is now available at the The Microsoft Store. OneNote 2010 is available as a standalone version or as part of any of the Microsoft Office 2010 suites, including the popular Home and Student Edition. You can order a physical, boxed product or opt for the “green” electronic download.

Frequently Asked Questions about Microsoft Office 2010 Beta

  • Where can I download the Office 2010 Beta?
Now that the finished version of Microsoft Office 2010 has been released, the Beta program has been closed. If you have already downloaded the Beta, you can install and use it until October, 2010. After that time, you must remove the Beta software or replace it with the released version of Microsoft Office 2010.

  • What exactly is “Beta software”?
“Beta” is a nickname for software which has passed a significant internal stage of software development and is being made available to a larger community of users for testing purposes. A Beta release allows real-world users to try out the software on a variety of computer systems and configuration environments and provide feedback about any issues or malfunctions that they may find in the software. If you haven’t participated in a public Beta before, please understand the risks that are commonly assumed of and associated with Beta-level software releases. Because it is still undergoing testing, Beta software can be unstable and could potentially cause crashes or data loss. If you cannot install the Office 2010 Beta on a separate computer for safe testing purposes and you still want to test-drive the software on your main PC, please be sure to completely back up your computer and all files that you care about. If you’re using Windows 7, click here to learn how to back up your hard drive. We’re very excited about this release and are proud of the hard work that has gone into these products, but final testing has only just begun. As with all Beta products, the Office 2010 Beta is not covered by Microsoft Technical Support and provides only limited (if any) finalized documentation. You should never rely on Beta software to do mission-critical work.

I’d like to use a calendar page in OneNote and link it to Outlook so I could click on the link to access/view my Outlook calendar from OneNote and view or make changes to the Outlook. Is this possible? If so, how?

I have the release version of OneNote installed and I’m getting the ‘This service is unavailable’ message when I go to share to a Web Location. I thought this was supposed to be operational after the beta was over. I can save 2010 Word docs to SkyDrive okay – why not OneNote?

I am trying to find the feature that in 2010 for screen clipping options. It doesnt seem to be there. I want to be able to take a screen clipping and have it appear on the same page as the previous clipping and not have it placed on another page and then having to cut and paste later.

Use OneNote 2007 all the time. I use Send to One from Word 2007 and other programs, but can’t seem to find the mechanism to “Send to OneNote” either in a dropdown menu or an Icon button on a Ribbon in 2010 version.
    Is it there yet?

I am using sharepoint and for some reason embedded files (only those that show they were inserted from a temp file) aren’t opening if the temp folder is gone. Yet I can email myself the page with those files and then open the files. Seems like OneNote doesn’t check the Sharepoint server or local OneNote cache when requesting to open an embedded file in all situations, though the files are there.

I have yet to find anything on the video conference recording system. How does one adjust the video correctly. I made ten test using different kbs settings and there is this stupid Selection at the top asking: When Playing linked audio and video, rewind from the start of the paragraph by the following number of seconds: What the heck is this about and how does one get the video and voice to match without the video jerking around. I have tried 256kbs Thur 1400kbs .

I remember in 2007 version being able to create a new notebook from a file hierarchy on my harddrive, that is, my entire client directory, broken down by client files, and subdirectories such as correspondence, billing, exhibits, etc. the notebook would automatically have the structure of my client directory, then I could create new pages or sections where needed for each client.
I cant find that in 2010. It seems to me there was an option to “create notebook from directory folder” or something like that. . .

There is nothing on this site about OneNote starting up on start up. This needs to be added here plus disabled or on option to disable it so it doesn’t start up during computer start up. I dont even use this part of Office yet, maybe plan to later but still dont want it to start up during startup. I have also sent a frown in due to this with explanation of this what i am saying.

Anybody know where a setting for this is ?? If not just disable it out of your start up folder i guess for now.

Whenever I print a Powerpoint or PDF file to ON 2010, I get all the slides/pgs or the file under one page. Is there any way to get them to one page/slide of original file per page of ON? ON 2007 had that by default.

I made myself custom tags and loved them. But after closing the program and shutting down the computer, when next I opened it the custom tags had vanished from the dropdown box. They are still on the pages and I can search by them, but without redoing them in the “customize” window there is no way of adding them again to new items. Anyone else have this problem ?

Would love to see a feature where entire sections and subsections can be copied and pasted within the same notebook. For example, I create a blank template for an entire section (e.g. project) that contains multiple sections and/or pages. The ability to copy an paste the entire thing to a new one would be invaluable.

I’m using OneNote to store articles from magazines and other sources, I would love it if you could put in a photo or page that doesn’t look like a printout of an 8.5 x 11 page with a 2″ x 3″ photo in the middle In other words, isn’t there a way to eliminate all the “white space” when you drag and drop a small image? Other than that, OneNote is the best thing that has happened to computing since spreadsheets. :)

I am pretty sure that this function is not available in OneNotes.

My suggestion is a build in scientific calculator that drops down off the ribbon command line. I am a chemical engineering student and it gets annoying when I have to rearrange the windows so the calculator and my notes are visible at the same time. I think the drop down calculator would be a way to solve the issue.

Is it possible to print anything other than pages? For example: I have a book with 30 pages, each one a project. I would like to print a list of the projects, ie a list of the pages. It would be nice to print a list of the sections also, or the sections with the pages — in other words, an outline.

Just printed an Excel file (2007) to One Note(2010). The Excel file had 5 columns and maybe 10 rows. When I opened One Note, there were only 3 columns, and all the rows.
Went back to Excel and Save Print Area: and tried again to print to One Note. Same thing, One Note only displays 3 columns.
    Not a good thing.

  41. Stew

    10. Feb, 2010

One feature that I don’t see in ON 2010 is the option to always jump to the top of a page when you click on the page’s tab, or navigate to it any other way. Sometimes it bugs the heck out of me when I go to the page and it’s scrolled to the bottom.

I understand how that would be good *while* you’re taking notes. But it’s a total pain when you’re browsing a new shared notebook and you always have to scroll back to the top.

OneNote is bad at math. When entering the formula Log(25000)= the results come out as 10.12663110385034. However, Caculator shows the value as 4.397940008672037609572522210551.

I am new to One Note. Can I use this software for recipe organization? I would like to be able to scan a vast collection of recipes and organize them with the help of a software program. Is there any tutorial that can show me how to do this?

    • Stew

      10. Feb, 2010

      Lisa,

You could absolutely do this. It’s mostly a matter of deciding how you want to organize the section groups (maybe by cuisine?) and the tabs (by time vs by main component (chicken, fish, etc), then start creating pages. You can easily move pages to reorganize later, but it’s good to spend a couple minutes planning first.

Be sure to include keywords on each page to cross-reference the recipies so you can search for them. For example, if the page is for Chinese pan-fried dumplings (Mmmmm!), be sure to put keywords like: chinese, appetizer, sausage, etc somewhere on the page (maybe at the top?). That way you can find this one by searching your whole notebook for any of those words.

      Have fun!

    Two issues:
    1. It would be nice to toggle on/off the visibility of tags associated with a note so I easily see what I had applied.

    2. When I created a summary page, a note that was a bulleted list was broken down to the individual lines and then scattered in the summary in alpha order. I want the bulleted list to remain intact as a single note in the summary.

    05. Feb, 2010

How do you move a page to go under a different heading? Also, is there a way to input data (written & sound) from my Pulse SmartPen into One Note?

    Thanks!

    • Stew

      10. Feb, 2010

      Joseph,

      1. Click and drag the page’s tab (on the right) over the notebook tab you want to move it to. To move to another notebook, click and drag the page’s tab over the notebook’s tab (on the left) and hover for a second. When the list of sections in that notebook pops up, drag and drop the cursor over the desired section.

      2) As far as I know, there’s no direct support for smartpens, especially the audio. You can certainly drag and drop any text and drawings from your SmartPen, once you’ve got them in their proprietary application, though it may all come over as an image. So you couldn’t edit the text in OneNote. But OneNote should be able to index the image’s text so you can search on it!

      Good luck.

    28. Jan, 2010

I love the additions and upgrades that ON2010 offers. I know very well that ON is not intended to be a word processor nor a database nor a spreadsheet, yet we consumers keep pushing to have features from all of these types of applications integrated into ON.

So I am going to do it again. I know I can type numbers in a row, use the plus symbol and the equals symbol and get a total. Is it possible to get ON to do more advance math or to have it add in a colum rather than row?

I do see in the ribbon an equasion tool which I presume is going to be similar to the equasion tool in Word. I can not get it to “ungrey” no matter what I try.

    • John Wsol

      13. Feb, 2010

If your OneNote file is 2007 format you cannot use the Equation tool. Create a NEW OneNote using 2010 and you will be able to try to do equations.

Is the table functionality in onenote 2010 going to be more excel-like?

It would have been really useful to be able to do some simple spreadsheet like functions in previous versions of onenote (of which I am a big fan). For example: snippets of spreadsheets…..

NIIIIIICCCCCCEEEEE product!! Love the “print to OneNote integration” for my 64bit Windows laptop (although David’s workaround was appreciated)! Also, I just LOVE the format painter — thank GOD!!
    Two things:
1.) When I use “clip” to bring in something from the internet (which comes in as a “pic” of course), if I draw on it, or annotate it, how can I “anchor” these things to the picture so if I later add a couple paragraphs to the text before the pic, all the markings STAY PUT on the “moving” pic? The markings, circles, etc. don’t move… but the clipped pic adjusts and moves down the page.
2.) I do a lot of writing, which I later may need to transfer to Word for formatting reasons — including annotating some comments as footnotes. In ON, Is there a way to annotate footnotes (or even “endnotes”) so later if I transfer the doc to Word, the footnotes could be easily transferred somehow? Thanks!!
