Frequently Asked Questions
Posted on 19. Nov, 2009 by OneNote in Help Articles
During the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta program, we expect our customers to have many questions about Office 2010 and OneNote 2010. This Help article will be periodically updated to address such questions, so that you can easily check out the latest rumor control whenever you return to this site. If you have questions about OneNote 2010 Beta (or about Office 2010 Beta in general) which are not already answered in one of the other Help articles on this site, please post them below.
Note: Answers provided here are intended for the Beta versions of Microsoft OneNote 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 and may not apply to the final, released versions of the software. Information provided on this page (and on the rest of this Web site) is provided “as is,” with no warranties (expressed or implied), and it confers no rights.
Frequently Asked Questions about Microsoft OneNote 2010 Beta
- Does OneNote 2010 Beta come in a native 64-bit version?
Yes — when you download the Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus Beta from the official site, you will be given the choice to download either the 32-bit (x86) version or the 64-bit (x64) version. This choice will appear at the bottom of the screen on which you are given your Multiple Activation Key (MAK) code. If you download the 64-bit version of Office 2010 Beta, OneNote 2010 Beta will be available in its native 64-bit version.
- Does the “Send to OneNote” print driver work on 64-bit systems?
Yes — OneNote 2010 Beta includes a fully functioning “Send to OneNote” print driver in both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and both versions work on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.
- When using the “Dock to Desktop” feature on a netbook, OneNote docks to the top of my screen instead of to the right side. How can I get the original left/right split back?
Left-click and hold the title bar of the docked OneNote 2010 window and then drag it to the side of the screen, releasing the mouse button only once you’re outside of the docked OneNote window. This should work for docking the OneNote window to any side of your screen. (Thanks to our Beta tester Elena for submitting this tip!)
- Is the OneNote 2010 Web App and SkyDrive integration available for Beta testing?
No — the interest in this feature has been overwhelming and we very much appreciate it. Unfortunately, internal testing has not yet been completed and the OneNote Web App could not be included in the Office 2010 Beta download package. We’re hard at work on finalizing this exciting new feature, so please check back at a later date. We will post an update if there is any change in the availability of this feature during the Beta timeframe.
- I already have OneNote 2007 and/or Office 2007 installed on my PC. What happens to my current version if I install the Beta over it?
Please have a look at the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta FAQ and read the information in the section titled “Microsoft Office 2010 Beta.”
- Are there any templates available for OneNote 2010 Beta?
Yes — you can download any of our free OneNote 2007 templates and use them with OneNote 2010 Beta. Click here to view the full list of OneNote template categories.
- I’ve installed Microsoft Office 2010 Beta on my Windows smartphone but I can’t get OneNote 2010 Beta to sync. What’s wrong?
This is a known issue in the 64-bit version of OneNote 2010 Beta. You can successfully sync with the 32-bit Beta client, but the 64-bit Beta client is currently having sync issues. We’re working hard to resolve this issue in the final version.
- When does OneNote 2010 Beta expire?
OneNote 2010 Beta (and all the other programs in the Office 2010 Beta) will expire in October 2010. At that time, you can uninstall the Beta software and download the trial version of OneNote 2010 or purchase the full version. OneNote 2010 will be sold as a standalone product and included in Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Business, Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus, and Microsoft Office 2010 Enterprise.
- Is OneNote 2010 Beta available for the Mac?
No — at present, OneNote 2010 Beta is available for Windows only. Please see the full system requirements for more information.
- Is OneNote 2010 Beta available in languages other than English?
Yes — aside from English, all of the programs in the Office 2010 Beta are also available for use in Simplified Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.
Frequently Asked Questions about Microsoft Office 2010 Beta
- Where can I download the Office 2010 Beta?
You can download Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus Beta from Microsoft’s official Beta site. This is a limited time opportunity, so if you’d like to test this pre-release software and provide us with feedback, try to download and install the software as soon as possible.
- What exactly is “Beta software”?
“Beta” is a nickname for software which has passed a significant internal stage of software development and is being made available to a larger community of users for testing purposes. A Beta release allows real-world users to try out the software on a variety of computer systems and configuration environments and provide feedback about any issues or malfunctions that they may find in the software. If you haven’t participated in a public Beta before, please understand the risks that are commonly assumed of and associated with Beta-level software releases. Because it is still undergoing testing, Beta software can be unstable and could potentially cause crashes or data loss. If you cannot install the Office 2010 Beta on a separate computer for safe testing purposes and you still want to test-drive the software on your main PC, please be sure to completely back up your computer and all files that you care about. If you’re using Windows 7, click here to learn how to back up your hard drive. We’re very excited about this release and are proud of the hard work that has gone into these products, but final testing has only just begun. As with all Beta products, the Office 2010 Beta is not covered by Microsoft Technical Support and provides only limited (if any) finalized documentation. You should never rely on Beta software to do mission-critical work.
Frequently Asked Questions about the OneNote 2010 Beta Documentation Web Site
- Why are you not showing more screenshots in the Help articles?
We’re planning to add many screenshots, videos, and other visuals to our Help articles throughout this site over the coming weeks. Beta software does not usually include any official documentation because the product’s user interface is not finalized until after the Beta program concludes. For the OneNote 2010 Beta, however, we are breaking with this tradition because we really want you to be able to get up to speed more quickly and, in the process, tell us which parts of the documentation set are most useful to you and which articles could use some more work. While we refine the documentation set, we will do our best to add as many visuals as possible to make learning the program easier.
Note: Answers provided here are intended for the Beta versions of Microsoft OneNote 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 and may not apply to the final, released versions of the software. Are there features in OneNote 2010 that don’t work on Windows XP Pro?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
09. Jan, 2010
There are several benefits to using OneNote on newer operating systems like Windows 7 or Windows Vista, but no — there aren’t any features that are turned off if you’re still running Windows XP.
Daniel Escapa
24. Nov, 2009
scoobie – Yes notebooks created in the beta will work with the final version or at the least case you would be able to upgrade them to the final version.
Ray – XP is a supported platform however for the Send to OneNote print driver it work you will need to install the .Net Framework and the XPS Essentials.

Well that’s very good news indeed. That suggests there’s no real reason (other than the usual health warnings) not to use the beta.

I wonder if there’s already a way to do it, or if anyone’s thought about it, but it would be nice to have an easy way to import a chm file directly into one note, and have it adapted to the notebook/section/page structure of Onenote.
I spend a lot of time going through the MS chm files when learning about or implementing new products, and it woudl be nice to have it OneNote where I could highlight and tag key information that would need to be referenced later.

What notebook sharing functionality is there in the beta? Does the network sharing work at home? It seems to imply that you need a network server between the two pcs – is this right?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
09. Jan, 2010
You can share notebooks between computers in the same ways you can share folders between computers on a network — at home, at work, at school, etc. Other ways to share are via a SharePoint server or a SkyDrive server, but these features are not yet fully implemented in the Beta.

Will there be a way to send web clips from inside Mozilla Firefox to OneNote?
Jon Connelly
15. Dec, 2009
You can with OneNote 2007. Firefox Add-on “Clip to OneNote” works with 2003 or 2007.

Am I able to share OneNote templates that I create? More importantly, will I be able to see/download templates that others have created?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
09. Jan, 2010
Yes, you can share your creations and if someone sends you a page with their own template, you will see their design.
You can also get hundreds of free, user-created templates from the Office.com Web site. Here’s a shortcut to the OneNote template categories: http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.aspx?assetid=ES101732271033&CTT=96

how do i protect onenote? it says “you password protect this section. To password protect a section, on the File menu, click Password Protect this Section. This prevents other people from seeing these pages on your screen and the file will be encrypted.” but under File there is not option that says “password protect this section”…
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
02. Dec, 2009
Victoria, you can password-protect any section in a notebook by right-clicking the section tab and then clicking “Password-protect this section.” More information about these features is coming soon.

I’m trying to insert background image for pages in one note. But I can’t able to see any option to do so. can u help me how to insert background image ?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
02. Dec, 2009
You can either paste the image you want onto a page or click the Insert tab on the Ribbon and then click Picture. Single-click the image and drag it into position where you want it or cut and paste it where you want it. With the image still selected, right-click it and then click “Set Picture as Background.”

Tiana, these features should work in Beta. Make sure you’re not working in a Read-Only notebook. Try creating a brand-new notebook and testing the tools on a new blank page. Does it work there?

can you import Evernote notebooks into OneNote
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
14. Dec, 2009
Hi Richard, there’s no official converter as of yet, but you can send content from any program on your PC to OneNote via the OneNote print driver. Simply “print” to OneNote by selecting “Send to OneNote” as your printer in the Print dialog box and the information will be imported into OneNote. You can right-click images to extract text from them and paste it elsewhere for editing. And, of course, you can copy and paste anything as well.

Can OneNote accept input from a wireless pen like the IOGear Mobile Digital Scribe?
Tracy
18. Dec, 2009
I have my Iogear Mobile Digital Scribe hooked in and can use it in OneNote just fine. The only problem is that I have to write very, very small otherwise the writing onscreen is huge.
To compensate, I do my writing in journal or Inkseine then paste it into OneNote as either a graphic image or as ink. I can then resize to whatever I want.
I would rather have the text show up smaller so I can write more than a few words per line. I don’t always convert to text because I like the look of my own handwriting.

Can one note recognize multiple languages? I have Win 7 ultimate 64 bit, an English login and a Japanese UI login, I’ve also installed the japanese language pack for my english 2010 64 bit beta install, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do Japanese input. I made Japanese my “default language” in OneNote, still no Japanese input. Is this just not possible in OneNote? Sorry, not very familiar with the app, but getting a tablet PC soon, and OneNote seems like a must have, but REAL multilingual support would be a HUGE HUGE plus. :)
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
14. Dec, 2009
Thanks for the feedback, Dave. Since much of the language support in Microsoft Office is governed by WIndows regional settings, there are many factors to consider. It gets complicated pretty fast and it’s hard to document. I know that the Office team will provide guidance about language support in the Office 2010 documentation overviews when the new version is released, but as I am bilingual myself, I’m planning to write a OneNote-specific blog post about this in the New Year, as I’m often asked about this. I’m not sure if this will happen in time for the Beta, as there is much else to document. But it’s definitely on my list. :) Thanks again for posting a comment about this.

02. Dec, 2009
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your advice, but the pens are still not working. I’m not even sure where you can adjust a notebook to “read only” but I did open a new file to no avail. I should also note that the ink feature is working in PowerPoint 2010 and Word 2010…just not OneNote.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Office 2010 software and the drivers for my Wacom tablet (for Windows 7). I don’t know why this problem is specific for OneNote…
HELP!
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
04. Dec, 2009
Thanks for the follow-up, Tiana. Hmm, this is strange. The pens on the Draw tab all work fine on my Tablet PC (and on my desktop PCs, for that matter). Out of curiosity, did you install the Office 2010 Beta over your existing OneNote 2007 or Office 2007 installation or did you install fresh? Not a trick question either way, just want to know how our installations might differ. Also, did you install the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of the Beta?
Laurent
10. Dec, 2009
Hello Michael,
I am having the same problem as Tiana. I used to have the same issue with OneNote 2007 ever since moving to Windows 7 (64-bit), which I use on my Fujitsu T4220 tablet. I uninstalled Office 2007 before installing Office 2010 Beta (64-bit).
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
14. Dec, 2009
Laurent, thank you for posting a comment to confirm Tiana’s issue. Is it only the pens that aren’t working? Can you use the highlighter tool? I’ll investigate to see if there are any new known issues with the pens. Please be patient, I may not be able to post an update about this until the New Year. If I need more information from either of you about your configuration, I’ll follow up with you. Thanks for pointing out this issue and for trying out the Beta!
Laurent
17. Dec, 2009
Michael, unfortunately none of the pen tools are working, even the highlighter tools are greyed out. I hope you find a solution! Thanks for looking into it!

09. Jan, 2010
Tiana and Laurent, I have some new information for you. There is a known issue in the Beta where if you have speech enabled, you may be coming across the experience you are describing. Can you each try pressing WINDOWS KEY + V while in the OneNote 2010 Beta and seeing if the pen and highlighter tools are re-enabled for you?
Laurent
11. Jan, 2010
Hello Michael, thank you very much! This has worked for me. The pen and highlighter tools are now enabled. What does WINDOWS KEY + V do exactly in OneNote? Just disable speech?

05. Dec, 2009
I’m a relatively new OneNote 2010 beta user but I had a quick question:
From Outlook, I am able to select a contact and link that contact to OneNote which essentially creates a contact item within OneNote. Can I go the other way? Can I link a OneNote item into an Outlook contact? It would be cool to access specific OneNote items from within Outlook.
More importantly, are there plans to get rid of Outlook’s ineffective Notes (stick note format) folder and replace it with OneNote? It seems like a logical progression.
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
09. Jan, 2010
Yes, the OneNote/Outlook integration is both ways. You can create Outlook items in OneNote to link between them in the two programs, or you can use the OneNote commands in Outlook to establish a linked relationship to new OneNote items.
I like your idea about replacing Outlook’s Notes folder. ;) I’ll pass that onto our product team!

08. Dec, 2009
Hi. I am a new user and so far very impressed. A question though please:
Q. Is it possible to change the default text color?
On the Home ribbon in the Styles section, some of the styles listed (Heading 2, Heading 3 etc) are blue in color. I would rather they were a different color.
It is a real pain to manually change the font color each time and being able to change the syle color seems a much better way. Is this possible?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
14. Dec, 2009
Hi Adrian, thanks for your feedback. You can change the default font, font size, and font color by clicking the File tab on the Ribbon and then clicking Options. In the OneNote Options dialob box that appears, you can customize a variety of OneNote settings to your liking. Hope this helps. :)

i liked oneNote 2010 but i am having some problem when i want to move a page to password protected Notebook, OneNote crashes?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
14. Dec, 2009
Does this happen when the password-protected section is locked or unlocked? Also, are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of OneNote 2010 Beta?
Clyde
10. Dec, 2009
1. I am having problems with the Outlook integration features — they don’t seem to work. (I finally got Outlook 14 installed properly and expected that they would now work.) I noticed in Outlook that the there are still add-ins pointing to Office 12 ONBttnOL.dll (even though I have uninstalled it)?
2. I have reported several bug issues via the send-a-smile application — is that where I’m supposed to report them? I don’t see them on the developer known bug issues list. (IE: Attempting to open an embedded Excel document when Excel is already launched produces a “file not found” error message. Great for scaring users. You have to let OneNote open Excel itself.)
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
14. Dec, 2009
Clyde, thanks for your feedback. We’re currently testing some of the Outlook integration issues that some of our Beta testers have reported. As soon as there are confirmed issues, we’ll post some updates. For the record, are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the Office 2010 Beta?
Regarding the Send-a-Smile application, yes—please use it to send your bug reports. You will not see immediate notification or confirmation of issues, but I assure you that these are looked at every day. It’s the most direct way you can report issues to the product teams, so if you’ve been using this, our thanks to you!

11. Dec, 2009
I don’t see the “Create Linked Page” option that 2007 had. (right click some text and you can create a new page with that title + an immediate link where you clicked). Will this feature be available in 2010?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
14. Dec, 2009
Hi Micah, this feature has evolved into Wiki-style linking. You can now create a link to any existing page in a notebook (or even to a new page) by simply typing the Wiki link syntax — for example, [[The Page Title That I Want]] — or by using the new page search experience from within the Insert Hyperlink dialog box. This lets you easily create Wiki like notebooks with lots of cross links across pages. Alternately, you can also right-click the tabs of pages, sections, and notebooks and use the Copy Link to… commands on the shortcut menus to copy a link to these locations that you can paste elsewhere in a paragraph of text. Hope this helps!

01. Jan, 2010
About the “Copy Link to paragraph” feature, it seems in 2010 it can only be invoked from the context-menu. I can’t find a “Keyboard shortcut” nor a “Quick Access Command” for it. It’s one of the heavily used features on my list. I’m used to the convenient of ON 2007 in this regard. Please provide at least one of the quicker methods I’ve mentioned above.
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
09. Jan, 2010
I’m not sure this is possible, but I agree with you that this would be very useful. I’ll pass this on to the product team.
Todd
14. Jan, 2010
While Wiki-style linking is nice, removing the “Create Linked Page” command is a definite takeaway. I now have to go through more steps to create a linked page to existing text (Create the page, title the page, create the link), whereas before, I just had to highlight the text and create the named page from the drop-down menu). Please consider adding this feature back.
Todd
14. Jan, 2010
Please disregard my last comment. I figured out how Wiki-style linking works, and it is not any more work than before.

Am I just blindly missing the “Send to Outlook Tasks”?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
17. Dec, 2009
Hi Jon, there’s actually no feature called “Send to Outlook Tasks.” We have “Send to OneNote” which brings information from other applications like Internet Explorer and Outlook into OneNote. And you can also assign Outlook tasks from text or objects in OneNote by clicking the “Outlook Tasks” button on the Ribbon (Home tab). You can also right-click on a line of text in OneNote and the “Outlook Tasks” command will show on the shortcut menu. Hope this helps!

15. Dec, 2009
We have lots of users that share a notebook and would like to set up a shortcut on their desktop. What are the chances of being able to create a shortcut to a specific OneNote notebook on the desktop? If it is already possible, how do can I do this?
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
17. Dec, 2009
Hi Val, you can do this by right-clicking the notebook icon (tile) on the Navigation bar of the notebook you want to link to and clicking “Copy Link to Notebook”. Now switch to your Windows 7 desktop and right-click in a blank space and click “New” and then “Shortcut.” When it asks you the location of the item hit CTRL+V to paste the notebook link and then click Next. On the next screen, type a meaningful description for the shortcut and then click Finish. Now when you double-click this icon, it will launch OneNote and open the notebook you specified. Note that you can also do this with specific sections and even pages. Just right-click their tabs to copy a shortcut to that location. You can also do this for a specific paragraph of text on a page.

Is there a way to save notes in a state so that OneNote will not corrupt the inks? Because OneNote keeps regularly shuffling my inked notes all around, deleting some of them etc, rendering everything corrupted and unusable.
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
09. Jan, 2010
Hi Ali, thanks for your feedback. Based on what you’ve summarized, I’m not sure I understand what exactly is happening to your handwritten notes. Can you follow up with some more detailed specifics about what you’re seeing? If you could post a couple of screenshots, it might also help. Let me know and I’ll try to give you a better answer. :)
Ali
17. Jan, 2010
Sure, I will post some screen shots of the phenomena. But in a nutshell, what ends up happening is “connected components” of the inks always shift around, going over other inks.
I have another question. Is there any reason why the inking quality on Windows Journal 7 is better than OneNote 2010 beta? In both of them, pressure sensitivity is disabled. I can’t put my finger on it, but inks in journal kind of look more “smooth” and “stylish”, whereas in OneNote they appear blocky and crude. I have a screen shot of this also, but is there any way to attach screen shots to this reply?

2010 is awesome, I love the right click features. Print to one note feature stopped working. I tried to “repair” but this did not restore the feature. What else can I do? Printing to one note is very important!

09. Jan, 2010
Thanks for the kudos, we appreciate positive feedback! :)
Can you follow up with some more information about the issue you’re having with the print driver? Are you using the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of the Office Beta? Also, what version and edition of Windows are you using? And were you previously able to use the print driver in the Beta or has it never worked for you? If the print features worked before, can you remember installing or using anything on your computer that might have coincided with the feature suddenly not working?

31. Dec, 2009
Hi there … I’ve bumped into some OneCare firewall issues when trying to upload to SkyDrive (from other Office 2010 apps; I gather the OneNote Web app isn’t ready yet which is why that functionality is disabled.).
Since the beta has no executable to add to the exceptions, I’m not sure how to proceed. I disabled the firewall briefly to activate the software, but still can’t sync when the firewall is back on.
Also, what is the “Send a Smile” mentioned above for bug reports? I’ve encountered a few other issues I’d like to send over to y’all. What’s the best way to forward issues and bug reports?
Cheers,
Bill
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]
09. Jan, 2010
Hi Bill, the SkyDrive implementation is not yet available in the Beta. We’re working very hard to finalize this feature.
I’m personally not aware of any OneCare-related issues with OneNote, but I’ll ask around. Is the synching of shared notebook the only problem you’re having with your firewall?
Send a Smile got installed when you installed the Office 2010 Beta. You should see a yellow smileyface icon in your task tray notification are (might be hidden from view, depending on your version of Windows). You can click the happy face to open a form for positive feedback or the sad face to send problems or negative feedback to the product team. It’s the best way to log possible bugs with the product team as they look at these reports each and every day.

Hi,
I have been a devoted Office 2003 user and sometimes OneNote 2003 user, and never needed to touch Office 2007, but I was looking recently for a way to hyperlink between my OneNote 2003 notes and learned that OneNote 2010 will allow this.
That is great, but Is there some way to import existing notes/sections/folders from OneNote 2003 into Notebooks? At present I can make a page into an embedded document – one that I have to open to access, but with no ability to continue working on a notebook that I started in OneNote 2003 now that I want to really try it out in OneNote 2010. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi Pete, for more information about the support for (and limitations to) using OneNote 2003 notebooks with OneNote 2010, have a look at this article: http://www.onenotehelp.com/2009/11/19/file-format-changes-in-onenote-2010/
You can continue to open and read 2003 notebooks, but because it is such an old format now, you will not be able to use OneNote 2010 to change or edit 2003 notebooks without first upgrading them to the newer 2007 or 2010 formats.

how can i turn off side note
Michael C. Oldenburg [MSFT]

Side notes are optional and are only created when you choose to.
If you don’t want side notes to be created from the little OneNote icon in the Windows taskbar, you can right-click the icon for additional options. For more information about these options, click here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote/HA102819781033.aspx

Where is the Template section? in 2007 one would go to format to open up the template managment area. Now?

Because page templates can only be applied to new pages, the Templates gallery has been integrated with the New Page command.
While viewing a notebook section, look for the page tabs near the top of the right side of the page. Next to the New Page button there, click the little downward-facing arrow and then click Page Templates.

I know this may be a stupid question but somehow I’ve docked to the top of my desk and I much prefer a side dock; I can’t figure out how I did it much less how to change it back… Thanks.

Are you using a single monitor with your computer or do you have a dual-monitor setup?

I’m having the same problem as Michelle. I have only a single monitor, not a dual-monitor. I would dearly love an answer because I love the linked notes feature, but this makes it unusable for me.
Thanks for the timely and helpful responses. This site has been very helpful!

Hey Michael, I experienced a problem with “One Note” and taking notes. If I include handwriting (Tablet PC – Lenovo x200) and graphics on one page it happens that parts of the content displace themselves. The content then is not deleted, but neither is it where it is supposed to be. The same happens if I close onenote and start it again, parts of the content displace themselves.
Is there a way to solve that issue?

Hi Sascha, I’ve seen a couple of other reports about handwriting issues, but none have been specific enough to help me suggest any troubleshooting steps. First off, are you comparing handwriting features in the 2010 Beta to older versions of OneNote? That is to say, are you observing changed behaviour in the new version or have you only used OneNote 2010 and it’s not working as you expected? There’s no wrong answer to this question, I’m just trying to get an idea of where you’re coming from. :)
Would you be willing to share screenshots (and/or the actual notebook pages) for us to examine to see what’s happening? You can either type up what you’re expecting to see and what you’re getting, or shoot a quick video with a demonstration. If you’re willing to provide this, please reply here and I’ll send you an e-mail address that you can use to share the materials with me. Either way, thanks for posting feedback!

Hi Michael–I’m new to OneNote but very office/software experienced. Love the product, am making it a mainstay (along with Zotero in Firefox) for my research. The linked notes feature is great idea but it would help if the icon showing the link is always visible so I can quickly scan the page.
Would also like more control over the linked notes (have none now). I’m not even sure now if the paragraph I’m working on is linked until I move off my notes and then hover over for icon display. If we want to rely on this feature then we need to be sure it is up (I was experimenting w/firefox and it took a while before I realized that it would only work with MS).
Also, what is the margin on the page for? It would be nice if the margin was used for things like, well, the icon showing the linked notes (any other info too, like other kinds of links/tag info, etc).
Obviously interested in linked notes for firefox but I will wait.
One more thing: when docked it would be helpful if we could bring up some kind of navigation bar or something. I have been using the shortcut keys to get up through other pages but this doesn’t really show me the whole set of pages.
thanks! Great product

Hi Guys, I use OneNote 2007 all day, every day. I’ve been poking around 2010 for a couple hours now, and so far I am very impressed. One missing feature is making me cry though. I have roughly 30 custom tags that I use frequently, and in 2007 I keep the tag bar along the left side of the screen, even in full screen on my tablet. This one-click access to tags is invaluable to me and it seems to be gone. Am I missing it somewhere? if not, please bring it back. I know I can put the tag group on the Quick Access bar, but that’s still a minimum of two clicks, and sometimes a click-scroll-click procedure. That makes me grumpy. :)

Hey Michael,
I certainly can share more information. I can try to get screen screenshots and send them to you. Its my first time using Onenote more frequently, since I just purchased my Lenovo X200 tablet and were looking for the best possible way to use it for University. I’m not comparing it to the old version. After a while trying around, I figured that the problem occurs if I have turned on the option “drawing and handwriting” and then erase something with the eraser, some other unrelated part just jumps from right to left, or down to up. A quick, but not always working solution is when I selected the writing and told the software to treat it as a drawing. In fact, I just changed the option to treat all my writings as drawing but I cannot tell yet whether the software behaves differently or not. As already mentioned, I only use it for University and therefore draw graphs and write etc. I do not use the handwriting recognition into text though and didn’t really try it yet.
Thanks for your support Michael!!

Loving OneNote 2010. Although I could print to One Note 2007, I am unable to find where the notes are going in 2010. In 2007, they went to Unfiled by default. In 2010, it says it is sending, but are not filed.

My wife wants to sort her lists alphabetically like in Word. (there is a AZ arrow button in Word for that). But I could’t find this function in OneNote 2007. Will it be included in OneNote 2010?

Hello,
I am having trouble enabling the pen and highlighter functionality. The first time I clicked on it told me install the “tablet driver.” I’ve tried using the Windows Key + V and this does not work.

I am eager to use OneNote; it looks like a great program.
I’m especially interested in the Send to OneNote function, but I cannot get the Send to OneNote printer driver to install!
Help! I’ve tried everything! I’ve done a lot of research already.
It never installed in OneNote 2007 or OneNote 2010 beta.
I’m using XP SP3, 32bit, with all the updates.
I’ve tried every conceivable way of using the repair.
The trick with the generic printer install doesn’t work because the port isn’t listed, and on the advanced tab the print processor isn’t listed. (That’s KB952216)
Something is conflicting with the port and print processor, but I don’t know what, maybe Adobe PDF converter?
If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate your help.
I’ve tried Microsoft support, but they are stuck, too.
What I would like to try is adding a new port, but I’m not sure which kind of port to add.
Then, on the print driver option I would like to add a new, correct print driver, but I don’t know where the .inf file would be located on the dvd or somewhere else.
I understand that this may not be the right forum, but you seem to know more about OneNote than most.
Thanks in advance, and that you for the great OneNote program!

Hey Kevin, I know I cannot fix your problem but I think you problem is quite interesting, since I don’t experience any trouble at all with this tool. In fact, I use it quite often, however I only tried to print pdf and word documents to “onenote” so far but no problems at all…. !!

Hello. What about search and replace? It’s a text editor. You don’t like to admit that, but it “includes” a text editor. Even the most primitive text editors have search and replace. No excuses now. Even though scope is more varied, you have scope for search so you can have scope for replace. You can limit replace scope to current page–that is all most people want. It is crazy and lame to do search and replace with a Powertoys add-in.
’nuff said? Gonna do it? Even Treepad has it.

Guess my question wasn’t so stupid after all. It would appear that many users are having the mysterious auto-top-dock problem and more apparent is the mysterious lack of desire to acknowledge other than answering back with a question…. like everyone else i have a single monitor (notebook) and like everyone else i’ve tried to replace to side manually. Please… no more blowing this off… i have not been able to dock ’cause I hate it on the top!

I guess the easiest way to share notebooks right now would be to use a service like dropbox.com and install the autosync program. Having all users synced to the same account could be a little dicey I’m sure, but if it was a family finacial planner or something like that your family could use it would work just fine.

“I’ve installed Microsoft Office 2010 Beta on my Windows smartphone but I can’t get OneNote 2010 Beta to sync. “This is a known issue in the 64-bit version of OneNote 2010 Beta. You can successfully sync with the 32-bit Beta client, but the 64-bit Beta client is currently having sync issues. We’re working hard to resolve this issue in the final version.” Any possible workarounds?

I installed OneNote 2010 beta because of the style headings support, but they still don’t seem to map to Word. When I click “File -> Send to: Word”, Word doesn’t recognize the style headings, so I have no way to create a Word-generated Table of Contents, for example. Am I doing something wrong, or is there just no support for this? Any recommendations for auto-generating Word-compatible style headings from OneNote? Thanks!

Is it possible to send an entire section, or group of sections, to Word without having to send them one page at a time? Thanks again!

NIIIIIICCCCCCEEEEE product!! Love the “print to OneNote integration” for my 64bit Windows laptop (although David’s workaround was appreciated)! Also, I just LOVE the format painter — thank GOD!!
Two things:
1.) When I use “clip” to bring in something from the internet (which comes in as a “pic” of course), if I draw on it, or annotate it, how can I “anchor” these things to the picture so if I later add a couple paragraphs to the text before the pic, all the markings STAY PUT on the “moving” pic? The markings, circles, etc. don’t move… but the clipped pic adjusts and moves down the page.
2.) I do a lot of writing, which I later may need to transfer to Word for formatting reasons — including annotating some comments as footnotes. In ON, Is there a way to annotate footnotes (or even “endnotes”) so later if I transfer the doc to Word, the footnotes could be easily transferred somehow? Thanks!!
