Frequently Asked Questions
Posted on 19. Nov, 2009 by OneNote in Help Articles
During the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta program, we expect our customers to have many questions about Office 2010 and OneNote 2010. This Help article will be periodically updated to address such questions, so that you can easily check out the latest rumor control whenever you return to this site.
If you have questions about OneNote 2010 Beta (or about Office 2010 Beta in general) which are not already answered in one of the other Help articles on this site, please post them below. Responses cannot be guaranteed, as Beta software offers no technical support. For more information, please read About This Site.
Note: Answers provided here are intended for the Beta versions of Microsoft OneNote 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 and may not apply to the final, released versions of the software. Information provided on this page (and on the rest of this Web site) is provided “as is,” with no warranties (expressed or implied), and it confers no rights.
Frequently Asked Questions about Microsoft OneNote 2010 Beta
- Is the OneNote Web App and SkyDrive integration available for Beta testing?
No — the OneNote Web App was not included in the Office 2010 Beta download package because it was still undergoing testing. However, this feature is now available in the released version of OneNote 2010. For more information, click here.
- When I try to share a notebook in a Web location, I get the error message “This service is currently not available.” What’s wrong?

Please see the answer to the previous item titled, “Is the OneNote Web App and SkyDrive integration available for Beta testing?”
- Why does the ribbon keep disappearing whenever I click a ribbon tab and then return to edit my notes?
While the other programs in the Microsoft Office 2010 suite all display the ribbon by default, OneNote 2010 hides the ribbon when it’s not in use. This is an initial “factory setting” intended to maximize the amount of note-taking space you have on a page — especially if you’re working on a laptop, Tablet PC, or a netbook with a smaller screen. You can freely change this setting by pressing CTRL+F1 to toggle the ribbon on or off.
- Does OneNote 2010 Beta come in a native 64-bit version?
Yes — when you downloaded the Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus Beta, you were given the choice to download either the 32-bit (x86) version or the 64-bit (x64) version. If you downloaded the 64-bit version of Office 2010 Beta, OneNote 2010 Beta will be available in its native 64-bit version. If you downloaded both versions, you can use your Multiple Activation Key (MAK) code to activate either version.
- Does the “Send to OneNote” print driver work on 64-bit systems?
Yes — OneNote 2010 Beta includes a fully functioning “Send to OneNote” print driver in both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and both versions work on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.
- When using the “Dock to Desktop” feature on a netbook, OneNote docks to the top of my screen instead of to the right side. How can I get the original left/right split back?
Left-click and hold the title bar of the docked OneNote 2010 window and then drag it to the side of the screen, releasing the mouse button only once you’re outside of the docked OneNote window. This should work for docking the OneNote window to any side of your screen. (Special thanks to our Beta tester Elena for submitting this tip.)
- Are there any page, section, or notebook templates available for OneNote 2010 Beta?
Yes — you can download any of our free OneNote 2007 templates and use them with OneNote 2010 Beta. Click here to view the full list of template categories.
- How do I apply a template? I see no command for doing this on the ribbon.
Some commands have been moved to more contextual locations in OneNote 2010. Since it’s only possible to apply a template to a new page, the command has been moved to the New Page button menu. Click the little downward-facing triangle next to the New Page button (located at the top of your page tabs), and then click Page Templates. This opens the Templates task pane, where you can browse, apply, manage, download, and customize OneNote templates.

- I’ve installed Microsoft Office 2010 Beta on my Windows smartphone but I can’t get OneNote 2010 Beta to sync. What’s wrong?
This is a known issue in the 64-bit version of OneNote 2010 Beta. You can successfully sync with the 32-bit Beta client, but the 64-bit Beta client is currently having sync issues. We’re working hard to resolve this issue in the final version.
- When does OneNote 2010 Beta expire?
OneNote 2010 Beta (and all the other programs in the Office 2010 Beta) will expire in October 2010. At that time, you can uninstall the Beta software and download the trial version of OneNote 2010 or purchase the retail version. OneNote 2010 will be available for purchase as a standalone version and it will also be included in all of the Microsoft Office 2010 suites.
- Is OneNote 2010 Beta available for the Mac?
No — at present, OneNote 2010 Beta is available for Windows only. Please see the full system requirements for more information about running OneNote 2010 Beta.
- Is there a OneNote app available for the iPhone?
No — at present, OneNote is available for Windows computers and Windows Mobile phones only. Please see the full system requirements for more information about running OneNote 2010 Beta.
- Is OneNote 2010 Beta available in languages other than English?
Yes — aside from English, all of the programs in the Office 2010 Beta are also available for use in Simplified Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. The final retail version of all Microsoft Office 2010 programs including OneNote 2010 will be available in several additional languages.
- I love the OneNote 2010 Beta and can’t wait to get my hands on the final version. Where can I purchase it?
The final retail version of OneNote 2010 is now available at the The Microsoft Store. OneNote 2010 is available as a standalone version or as part of any of the Microsoft Office 2010 suites, including the popular Home and Student Edition. You can order a physical, boxed product or opt for the “green” electronic download.
Frequently Asked Questions about Microsoft Office 2010 Beta
- Where can I download the Office 2010 Beta?
Now that the finished version of Microsoft Office 2010 has been released, the Beta program has been closed. If you have already downloaded the Beta, you can install and use it until October, 2010. After that time, you must remove the Beta software or replace it with the released version of Microsoft Office 2010.
- What exactly is “Beta software”?
“Beta” is a nickname for software which has passed a significant internal stage of software development and is being made available to a larger community of users for testing purposes. A Beta release allows real-world users to try out the software on a variety of computer systems and configuration environments and provide feedback about any issues or malfunctions that they may find in the software. If you haven’t participated in a public Beta before, please understand the risks that are commonly assumed of and associated with Beta-level software releases. Because it is still undergoing testing, Beta software can be unstable and could potentially cause crashes or data loss. If you cannot install the Office 2010 Beta on a separate computer for safe testing purposes and you still want to test-drive the software on your main PC, please be sure to completely back up your computer and all files that you care about. If you’re using Windows 7, click here to learn how to back up your hard drive. We’re very excited about this release and are proud of the hard work that has gone into these products, but final testing has only just begun. As with all Beta products, the Office 2010 Beta is not covered by Microsoft Technical Support and provides only limited (if any) finalized documentation. You should never rely on Beta software to do mission-critical work.
Note: Answers provided here are intended for the Beta versions of Microsoft OneNote 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 and may not apply to the final, released versions of the software. Yes, to a certain extent.
Select the object, right click, select “copy text from picture”, paste where you would like. You can even keep most of the source formatting.

I know the beta is over but I’m constantly frustrated that I can’t search for a literal string. For example, I want to search for “Microsoft Outlook”. I get lots of entries that Microsoft and Outlook (too many to go through). Then the navigation through these is painful and error prone.
What must I do to have OneNote search for the exact string I type?
BillK
30. Aug, 2010
Maybe it is a problem with the beta version. When I search using the “search all notebooks” box in the upper right corner, I get results for both the literal string (top hits) and for the individual words.

I was attempting to print something and now it sends everything into OneNote. However, the printing is off. How do I get it to print straight to my printer instead of going through OneNote first. I do not like being forced to go through another program.

Are you talking about other applications printing into OneNote first?
If so, select “File” -> “Print” -> Change “Name” to your printer instead of “Send to OneNote”

But i get the same error like its mentioned here: “When I try to share a notebook in a Web location, I get the error message “This service is currently not available.” What’s wrong?” Will the MSDNAA sites get an update to fix this? Or is this another new Problem?

I want to use some sort of reminder feature…in One Note is that a “to do”? I want to have the reminder repeat…can I do that… if so how? Thank you.
BillK

You have to set reminders indirectly through Outlook.
To do this: Right Click, Select the little red flag in the upper right, then set a task, you can set a reminder in the Outlook task.

When I print to (send to) OneNote 2010 as I used to do with 2007 I get the error message “OneNote cannot find a page on which to insert your printout. Navigate to a page in your notebook and then try again.” So I open a blank page in my notebook and try again and get the same message. What am I doing wrong?

send to onenote button missing in ie8. tried tools – internet options – manage add-ons. not there, how do i get it
BillK
31. Aug, 2010
Go to the menu bar of IE8 that is at the same level as all of your tabs (where you would expect to find “Send To Onenote”) find the “>>” button.
Click this and you should find “Send To OneNote”
To have it show up on your Toolbar: Tools -> Toolbars -> Customize -> Either grab “Send To OneNote” and drag it up to the top OR select it and click on the “Move Up” button.

Hello, Please advise. I could previously transfer and file all my emails into one note Now I cannot find the one note link to file all my emails. I cannot find the setting to fix this up. So initially there was a link to onenote from my emails. and now there isn’t. Thank You

In the drawing tools it would be useful if one had the option to attach the lines to the objects, so that objects can be moved around with the lines attached. This would be useful when sketching relational and component interaction models, etc.

can you link an Excel chart on a OneNote page
BillK
30. Aug, 2010
Not a link. But you can link the Excel spreadsheet itself, or place a copy of it in a page.
Another thing that you can do is to copy all the cells from your spreadsheet and paste them into OneNote. A OneNote table will automatically be created. Obviously, it doesn’t have a live link into Excel so you won’t have Excel funtionality.
